The university was founded by the Duke of Austria Rudolf IV and his two brothers Albert III and Leopold III on March 12, 1365, hence the name "Rudolf Alma Mater". With the promulgation of the Sanctio Pragmatica edict by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1623, the Jesuits took over the teaching of the Theology and Philosophy Department, thus making the university a stronghold of Catholicism for more than 150 years. It was not until the middle of the 18th century that Queen Maria Theresa forced the university to return to the control of the monarchy. Her successor, Joseph II, helped further reform the university, allowing Protestants and Jews to enroll, and introducing German as a compulsory language of instruction.
