The Amherst campus is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts, the largest campus and the earliest campus established. Like many colleges and universities, the Massachusetts College of Agriculture (formerly named) in Amherst was established in 1863 as a land-grant college that received initial start-up funding as part of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act. It was renamed "Massachusetts State College" in 1931 and "University of Massachusetts" in 1947. The library system is the largest state-supported library system in New England, with a collection of more than 6.1 million items. There are many buildings with distinctive architectural features commissioned by the Commonwealth of Nations and designed by world-renowned architects on the campus.
Massachusetts offers a variety of academic and extracurricular options. Of the more than 1,300 full-time faculty and staff, 92% have the highest degree in their field. The average SAT score for admission in 2018 is 1296, and the average GPA is 3.90, with a full score of 4.0. The campus has 21,969 undergraduate students and offers 109 bachelor's degree programs. The student to teacher ratio is 18:1, and 81% of classes have fewer than 40 students. Massachusetts has the Commonwealth Honors College (CHC), which has an average SAT score of 1411, making admissions more competitive. CHC provides personalized advice, small classes taught by professors, and the six-building honorary residential community that opened in the fall of 2013.
Students participate in 240 campus organizations, 21 NCAA first-level sports teams, living and learning dormitories, community services, internships, and teacher research. Massachusetts is also part of an alliance of five colleges. Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College and Amherst College are all within the free bus ride of the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority. Students can take classes on any of these campuses and participate in all extracurricular activities and cultural activities. Kumble R. Subbaswamy served as the 30th Prime Minister of Massachusetts.
