During the Industrial Revolution, Paisley was known for weaving threads. Coats Paper Mill is run by two brothers, Peter and Thomas Coats. These people, children of the Scottish Enlightenment, had ideals of freedom and became famous philanthropists. As a member of the Philosophical Society established in 1808, Coats donated a museum and library to the town, funded the construction of the Coats Observatory, and promoted education throughout Paisley.
This philosophical institution helped establish the Art Academy in 1836 and became the Government School of Design in 1846, which was one of the similar institutions established in the British Manufacturing Center from 1873 to 1851 in the 20th century. The purpose of their establishment is to improve the quality of product design in the country through industrial design training. Peter Coats was the dean of the Paisley School of Philosophy and the School of Government Design. Later, the design school was renamed the College of Art, and again renamed the College of Art Sciences.
In 1897, Princess Louise, the Duchess of Argyll laid the foundation for a magnificent new building of the college. The design was the winner of an architectural competition, partly funded by local industrialists (co-funded by Peter Brough and Thomas Coats).
By the beginning of the 20th century, the Paisley Institute of Technology and the School of Art (known since 1904) were the teaching centers of the external courses of the University of London. Perhaps the most famous president of the university is Lewis Fried Richardson, FRS mainly from 1922 to 1940 mathematicians, physicists, meteorologists, psychologists and pacifists who pioneered the modern mathematical techniques of weather forecasting, And similar technology to study the application in war. He also did pioneering work on fractals.
Throughout the first half of the century, the agency has been struggling financially. After World War II, the status of a central agency provided regular government revenue, but unfortunately, it also meant closing the art school and ceding students to the Glasgow Art School. Therefore, the new entity became the Paisley Institute of Technology; a central agency funded by the government in 1950. In the 1960s, on the main 20-acre (81,000 m 2) main site in downtown Paisley, a large-scale expansion was carried out next to the original neoclassical building.
