The University of Salford is a public university in Salford, Greater Manchester, England, 1 mile (1.6 km), west Manchester city centre. The Salford Royal College of Technology was established in 1896 and became an advanced technical college in 1956, and obtained university status in 1967 after the Robbins Higher Education Report.

It has 21,500 students and is located in a 160-acre (65-hectare) park on the banks of the Iwell River

The Royal Institute of Advanced Technology was renamed Salford University on February 10, 1967, when Queen Elizabeth II handed over the institution's Royal Charter. A multi-level chemical tower was built between Peel Building and Salford Library, Museum and Art Gallery in the 1960s, but it was demolished in the 1980s due to damage to the foundations of nearby buildings. The first president was Clifford Whitworth, and the main library of the university was named after him. The first prime minister was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who served as the president of the university until 1991. Prince Philip had a keen interest in the university during his tenure, and has continued since then, and visited the university’s award-winning acoustic laboratory in 2008.
The separate University College of Salford merged with the university. In 1996, the University of Salford established a single institution.

In 2012, the University of Salford announced a partnership with the UK's largest arms company (BAE Systems) and four other universities in northwest England (Liverpool, Manchester, UCLAN and Lancaster) to launch the Gamma project. Develop an "autonomous system". On September 5, 2016, Salford represented the University Challenge for the third time, facing the Open University. The all-men's team with the poet John Cooper Clarke as the mascot lost the game 210 to 115.
