The University of Otago (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Otago) is a public university based in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. It scores very high in terms of average research quality. In the 2006 [demand update], the number of A-level academic researchers it hired was second only to the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In the past, it ranked among the best in New Zealand's performance-based research fund evaluations.

The university was founded by a committee led by Thomas Burns and was formally established in 1869 by an decree of the Otago Provincial Assembly. The university accepted its first batch of students in July 1871, making it the oldest university in New Zealand and ranked third in Oceania. From 1874 to 1961, the University of Otago was affiliated with the Federal University of New Zealand and awarded degrees in its name.
Otago is known for its vibrant student life, especially its matte, which is often in old houses. Otago students have a long tradition of naming their apartments. The nickname of Otago student "Scarfie" comes from the habit of wearing a scarf in the cold winter in the South. But the word "breather" is a variant of "brother" and is very common nowadays. The university’s graduation song Gaudeamus igitur, iuvenes dum sumus ("Let us rejoice when we are young") acknowledges that students will continue to face challenges, even if not always in the expected way. The university’s student magazine, Critics, is New Zealand’s longest-issued student magazine.
