The University of Edinburgh (abbreviated as Philosophy. In the later nominal value), founded in 1582, is the sixth oldest university in the UK and the English-speaking world and an ancient university in Scotland. The university has five main campuses in Edinburgh, including many buildings of historical and architectural significance, such as those in the Old Town. This university played an important role in Edinburgh becoming the main knowledge center during the Scottish Enlightenment, earning the city the nickname "Athens of the North".

The university is a member of many well-known academic organizations, including the Russell Group, the Coimbra Group, Universitas 21, and the European Research University Consortium (a consortium of 23 leading research universities in Europe). Among all universities in the UK, it has the third largest endowment fund, second only to the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. In 2019-20, the university’s comprehensive annual income was 1,125.3 million pounds, of which 296.1 million pounds came from research grants and contracts.

The university’s alumni include some major figures in modern history, including three signatories to the United States Declaration of Independence and nine heads of state and government (including three British prime ministers). As of 2020, Edinburgh’s alumni, faculty and researchers include 19 Nobel Prize winners, three Turing Prize winners, one Abel Prize and Fields Medal winner, and two Pulitzer Prize winners Winners, two current Justices of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and several Olympic gold medalists. It continued with the British royal family, with the Duke of Edinburgh as prime minister from 1953 to 2010, and Princess Anne as prime minister in 2011.

Edinburgh receives approximately 60,000 applications each year, and in terms of application volume, it is the second most popular university in the UK. Its average UCAS entry tariff ranks fourth in Scotland and eighth in the UK overall.
