The university opened the new JB Firth building in September 2011 at a cost of £12.5 million. It has a school of forensic medicine and applied sciences, which includes disciplines such as chemistry and forensics. The new building has a 4000m2 teaching area, which includes six laboratories: two for undergraduate teaching in chemistry, one for chemical research, one analytical laboratory and two fire laboratories. The building is named after James Brierly Firth, the founder of British forensics.
The Sir Tom Finney Sports Center was grandly opened to replace the Foster Sports Center. In 2011, it was an indoor facility specially built on the main campus and the discounted student union sports club, with teacher-led courses and personal training. Sports membership (including gyms) is free for most students and discounts are available for faculty and staff.
The Engineering Innovation Center opened in 2019. This is a state-of-the-art, state-of-the-art facility, costing £35 million, located in one of the most intensive engineering and manufacturing areas in the UK. EIC provides an integrated space for teaching, research, and direct connections with industry, enabling students to work on real-world projects with business partners. EIC received £10.5 million in funding through the Lancashire Business Partnership Growth Agreement reached with the government. The new facility also received £5.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and £5 million from HEFCE's STEM Capital Fund.
Other key facilities include a £15 million media factory, facilities for digital media and performing arts students, and a "business incubator." The £5.3 million Allen Building provides facilities for students in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
