The University of Birmingham (unofficially the University of Birmingham) is a public research university located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. It was granted a royal charter in 1900 as the successor of Queen's College Birmingham (Birmingham Medical College established in 1825) and Mason College of Science (founded by Sir Josiah Mason in 1875), making it the first British citizen or The "Red Brick" University received its own royal charter. It is a founding member of the Russell Group of British research universities and Universitas 21, an international network of research universities.
The number of students includes 23,155 undergraduates and 12,605 postgraduates, ranking 7th in the UK (169). The agency's annual revenue from 2019-20 is 737.3 million pounds, of which 140.4 million pounds comes from research grants and contracts, and expenditures are 667.4 million pounds.
The university is home to the Barber Academy of Fine Arts, which houses works by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet; at the Shakespeare Institute; Cadbury Research Library, which houses the Minghanaian Middle East manuscript collection; at the Geological Museum Lapworth; and the 100-meter-high Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, which is a famous landmark that can be seen from many parts of the city. The university’s scholars and alumni include former British Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin, British composer Sir Edward Elgar and 11 Nobel Prize winners.
