The University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam, Netherlands: University of Amsterdam) is a public university located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. UvA is one of two large public research universities in the city, and the other is the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. Founded by the municipality in 1632 and later renamed the city of Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam is the third oldest university in the Netherlands. In terms of enrollment, this is the largest university in the Netherlands. The main campus is located in the center of Amsterdam, and some colleges are located in adjacent administrative districts. The university consists of seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economics and Business, Science, Law, Medicine, and Dentistry.

The University of Amsterdam produced six Nobel Prize winners and five Dutch prime ministers. The University of Amsterdam is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in five main ranking tables.
