The University of Science Malaysia (USM) is a public research university in Malaysia. It was established on June 1, 1969. It is a statutory body with its own charter and one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in northern Malaysia. It has three campuses: the main campus on Penang Island, the health campus in Kelantan, and the engineering campus in Nibong Tebal. Currently, it is cooperating with KLE University in India overseas to provide a doctor of medicine (USM) undergraduate degree. USM plans to open a global campus (Kuala Lumpur campus) in Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLCE).
With approximately 28,300 graduate and undergraduate students in 2009, USM is one of the largest universities in Malaysia. The number of lecturers is approximately 1,479, and the ratio of students to lecturers is approximately 19:1.
USM is a government-funded Autonomous University of Excellence (APEX) just to accelerate the program in Malaysia.
DS Ramanathan first proposed the idea of opening a university in Penang in the State Assembly in 1959, and it was later concretized when he was nominated as the chairman of the Penang University Project Committee. On August 7, 1967, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj held a groundbreaking ceremony after acquiring a piece of land in Sungai Yarra.
USM was established as a statutory body in 1969 and is the second university in Malaysia. It was originally called Universiti Pulau Pinang. The university operates on a borrowed venue from the Malayan Teacher Training Institute in Gelugor. In 1971, it moved to Minden’s current 239 hectares of land (the British Far East Command in the former Minden Barracks) in Gelugor, 10 kilometers from Georgetown.
There are two other USM campuses: one in Kubang Geliang in Kelantan, known as the Healthy Campus, and the other in Sri Ampangan, and Nibong Tebal in Penang, known as the Engineering Campus. The former has the School of Medicine, Health Sciences and Dentistry, while the latter has six engineering schools.
The University of Science Malaysia teaches and conducts research in the fields of pure science, applied science, pharmaceutical science, building science and technology, social science, humanities and education.
