The college was opened in 1986 at Bangunan Sim Lim in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. At the beginning of its establishment, the college only enrolled 37 students, but the number of students increased to 400 within 18 months. Enrollment continued to increase, and the college moved to Sungai Road, Kuala Lumpur in 1989.
 
Two years later, the college has more than 900 full-time students and established a permanent campus: Subang Jaya Inti College (ICSJ). It also opened a branch in Kuching, Sarawak in 1991; and the Sabah branch in Kota Kinabalu in 1996.
 
The main campus of INTI College Malaysia (ICM) was established in 1998 on 82 acres (330,000 m 2) of land in Putra Nilai. In March 2000, INTI acquired Penang International College in Bukit Jambul Education Town. In 2004, INTI continued to expand and opened three new sub-campus: Genting INTI International College, Metropolitan College and PJ College of Art and Design. So far, INTI has six sub-campus in Malaysia.
 
On September 4, 2006, ICM was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education to be upgraded to a university college. ICM changed its name to INTI University College (INTI UC).
 
In 2008, INTI merged with Guiguan International University and became a member of Guiguan International Education Group.
 
On May 31, 2010, the Ministry of Higher Education upgraded INTI University College to a university capable of granting its own degree-INTI International University.
 
On June 1, 2010, INTI UC received the upgrade to a full university from the Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohammed Khalid Noordin. It had 300 students at the time.
