Humboldt University of Berlin (German: Humboldt University Zu Berlin, referred to as HU Berlin) is a public research university in the Central Administrative District of Mitte in Berlin, Germany. It was founded by Frederick William III in Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich Ens Founded in 1809 under the initiative of Friedrich Ernst Daniel Schleiermacher, it was the University of Berlin (Universitätzu Berlin), making it the oldest of the four universities in Berlin. From 1810 to 1945 closed, it was named Friedrich Wilhelm University (German: Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität). During the Cold War University discovered that it was in East Berlin, it was actually divided into two, when the Free University of Berlin opened West Berlin. In 1949, the university was named after Alexander and William Humboldt.

The university is divided into nine faculties, including its medical school shared with the Free University of Berlin, with approximately 32,000 students enrolled, and 189 undergraduates from the postdoctoral level in some disciplines, offering degree programs. Its main campus is located on the Linden Avenue in central Berlin. The university is world-renowned for pioneering the Humboldt-style higher education model, which has deeply influenced other European and Western universities.
From the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, it was considered a world-class university of natural sciences because the university was associated with major breakthroughs in physics and other scientific fields by professors such as Albert Einstein.
