The origins of Coventry University can be traced back to the establishment of Coventry School of Design in 1843. It was later renamed the Coventry Art School, and in the early 20th century, as part of the Education Act of 1902, it was renamed the Municipal Art School again. . In the 1950s, its last name was changed, when it was called the Art Academy.
In the late 1950s, in order to solve the need for high-level technical training that the existing Coventry Technical College (now Coventry City College) could not meet, the construction of a new institution was started. It was founded in 1961, named after the automotive engineer Frederick Lanchester (Frederick Lanchester), and is named Lanchester Institute of Technology.
In 1970, Lanchester Institute of Technology and Art Institute and the Rugby Engineering and Technology Institute in the neighboring town of Rugby merged to form Lanchester Institute of Technology. In February 1971, the then Minister of Education, Margaret Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher) designated the agency. The name Lanchester makes the institution somewhat obscure (often confused with Lancaster and Manchester), especially when all the contestants in BBC Radio 4 Common Sense have not shown that the British brain can give the correct position. In 1974, the Polytechnic cancelled the graduation ceremony. The Birmingham pub bombing was feared that public gatherings would become the target; the ceremony was finally held in 2009, 35 years later. Lanchester Institute of Technology was later renamed "Coventry Institute of Technology" in 1987. When the Higher Education Reform Act of 1992 gave Coventry University of Technology status, the name was changed to Coventry University.
In 2010, London established a campus to further attract international students to the university. In 2012, "Coventry University College" was established on major university campuses to provide degree qualifications at a lower cost than ordinary university tuition fees.
As of 2017, Coventry is the highest-ranked modern university in the UK in the Guardian University Guide and Comprehensive University Guide. In the 2017 "Times Higher Education Youth University Rankings", it also ranked in the top 200, ranking the world's universities aged 50 or below.
In July 2017, the university announced that Margaret Casely-Hayford would succeed the new Prime Minister to replace Sir John Eggan.
The Coventry campus is currently undertaking a £430 million investment plan, which will last until 2022, including a new £37 million science and medical building and a £73 million student dormitory building in 2017 and 2018. Year open-development plan.
In September 2019, Coventry purchased 22 acres of Ryton Organic Gardens from the charity Garden Organic. The latter remained on site as a tenant along with the Heritage Seed Library and the university’s own agro-ecological, water and disaster resilience center.
