The history of Nagoya University can be traced back to 1871, when it was a temporary medical school/public hospital. In 1939, it became the Nagoya Imperial University, the last imperial university in the Japanese Empire. In 1947, it was renamed Nagoya University (Nagoya University) and became the National University of Japan. According to the reform measures of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, in 2014, all Japanese national universities were merged into national university legal entities. The university has a strong tradition in physics and chemistry. Many world-class scientific research results include Sakata model, PMNS matrix, Okazaki fragment, Noyori asymmetric hydrogenation and Blue LED was born in Nagoya University.
In the 20th century, Kuno Yasu and Katsunuma Seizō of NU were nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and Yoshio Ohnuki was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics. In the 21st century, NU people accounted for half of the total number of Nobel Prize winners in Japan (until 2014). Among the six winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Physics, there are three professors and five alumni. The number of winners ranks third among Japanese and Asian universities. In addition, the team led by Professor Kunihiro Morishima also participated in the pyramid project by using a special nuclear emulsion board. This led to the discovery of new rooms in the Great Pyramid in 2017.
In March 2012, Nagoya University hosted the International Symposium on Innovative Nano-Bio Devices. Three years later, the University of South Sudan was selected as one of the five champion universities for gender equality by the United Nations Agency for the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
In March 2018, Nagoya University was selected as one of the top five designated national universities. In order to become Japan's largest national higher education company, the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System, which was merged with Gifu University in April 2020, is a major university in the Tokai region.
