Maryhurst University is a private applied liberal arts and business university located in Maryhurst, Oregon. It is one of the oldest university degree-granting institutions in Oregon, receiving its first degree in 1897. Mary Hurst College was founded as St. Mary’s College and was run by the Holy Name Sisters of Jesus and Mary for many years. The former campus is located about nine miles south of Portland, Oregon’s Willamette River. Although Malihurst University is a Roman Catholic school, it serves students of all faiths and backgrounds.
The university offers bachelor's degrees in various liberal arts and business fields to complete courses, as well as graduate degrees in business and non-profit management, food systems and society, teaching, art therapy consulting, theology and applied theology, and interdisciplinary research. After its establishment in 1893, Maryylhurst became the first female liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest.
The university closed at the end of the summer of 2018. The decline in enrollment was the main reason. From the fall of 2013 to the fall of 2017, the enrollment fell from 1,409 to 743 in just four years. In recent years, during the Great Recession from 2007 to 2009, the university’s student population reached a peak of around 2,000. However, before the closure, Mary Hurst's faculty and staff questioned this claim.
