Lakehead University is a public research university with campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ontario, Canada. Lakeshou University, referred to as "Lakeshou University" or "LU", is non-denominational and receives provincial support. It has undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses, Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, the only internationally accredited (AACSB) business school in Northern Ontario, and is the location of the Western Campus of the Northern Ontario Medical College.
Hushou has more than 45,000 alumni. The main campus in Thunder Bay has approximately 7,900 students. As of September 2006, the new permanently expanded Orillia campus, located approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Toronto, has approximately 1,400 students.
Hushou University evolved from Hushou Technical College and Hushou College of Arts, Science and Technology. Lakehead Technical College was established in response to a briefing paper outlining the needs of higher education institutions in northwestern Ontario. It was established by an order of Ontario on June 4, 1946. The course began in January 1948 in a temporary rented dormitory in downtown Port Arthur. In September of the same year, the first batch of university courses were added to the curriculum.
Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology was established in accordance with a bill promulgated by the Ontario Legislature on August 1, 1957. A few years later, the original Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology Act was amended, granting the college the power to establish a new college and granting degrees in arts and sciences. The Lakehead University Act of 1965 received Royal Assent on June 22, 1965, and entered into force on July 1, 1965. The Hushou College of Arts, Science and Technology, later called "Hushou University", continues to be used in accordance with this new charter. The first study was awarded on May 5, 1965. The first university president was Senator Norman McLeod Paterson (Norman McLeod Paterson).
