Johns Hopkins University is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland. The university was founded in 1876 and named after its first donor, American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins (Johns Hopkins). His $7 million bequest (approximately $147.5 million in today's currency), half of which funded the establishment of Johns Hopkins Hospital, was the largest charitable donation in American history at that time. Daniel Coit Gilman (Daniel Coit Gilman), took office as the first president of the institution on February 22, 1876, leading the university to revolutionize American higher education through the integration of teaching and research. Adopting a concept graduate school from the German history of Heidelberg University, Johns Hopkins University, is considered the first research university in the United States. In the past few decades, the university has been ahead of all American universities in annual research and development expenditure. In fiscal year 2016, Johns Hopkins University spent nearly $2.5 billion on research. In addition to its main campus in Baltimore, the university also has graduate schools in Italy, China, and Washington, DC.
Johns Hopkins University (Johns Hopkins) is divided into 10 departments on campuses in Maryland and Washington, DC, with international centers in Italy and China. Two undergraduate departments, the Zanvyl Krieger College of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting College of Engineering, are located on the Homewood campus near Charles Village in Baltimore. The School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health Bloomberg and Johns Hopkins Children's Center are located on the campus of a medical institution in East Baltimore. The university is also composed of the Peabody Institute, Applied Physics Laboratory, Paul Nietzsche Institute for Advanced International Studies, the School of Education, Carey School of Business, and various other facilities.
Johns Hopkins University is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. As of October 2019, Johns Hopkins University has 39 Nobel Prize winners and 1 Fields Medal winner. Established in 1883, the Blue Jays men’s lacrosse team has won 44 national championships and has participated in the “Top Ten Conferences” as a member since 2014.
