When it merged from the YMCA into an independent institution in 1923, the university’s management was divided into a four-member council (increased to nine members in 1948), which was responsible for the university’s educational programs, including degree awards. A five-person board of directors holds university property. The board of directors meets once a month, and the board of directors only meet occasionally when it needs to approve this matter. The daily operation of the college is in charge of the education director. The director, governor and trustee are appointed by the San Francisco YMCA, although the latter two institutions are appointed on the recommendation of the Director of Education. The reorganization in 1948 resulted in the promotion of the director of education to president, and the current director Nagel T. Miner (since 1931) became president. In September 1949, the board of directors and the board of directors were merged. All current board members have retired. The members of the board of directors were elected as members of the board of directors. Of the 21 possible members, there are 14 members.
Currently, the university is managed by a self-sustaining board of directors with 20 to 47 members. The term of the trustee is 3 years, with one-third of the election time each year. The president of the university and the chairman of the alumni association have voting rights on the board of directors. In addition, there are four ex-officio members without voting rights, namely, the chairman of the student government, the chairman of the student lawyers association (law school student government); the dean of the university's dean of affairs, and the dean of the law department. The trustee is selected from business, law, accounting, taxation and charity. Since 2003, most trustees are university alumni. Among the current trustees, all but two have at least one degree from GGU (except for honorary degrees).
Prominent former trustees include the Secretary of the Navy Curtis D. Wilbur, led by Calvin Coolidge. John L. McNabb, a former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California; Warren H. Pillsbury, an expert on labor compensation in federal law (Governor 1923-1949, Trust Company 1949 Until 1963); James E. Hammond, now a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers (Governor 1923-1949, trustee 1949-1968); former San Francisco Mayor George Christopher ( George Christopher); with Bechtel executive Caspar Weinberger and the US Secretary of Defense.
The day-to-day operation of the university is in charge of the principal, five vice-principals and the heads of the four schools (accounting, business, law and tax).
