The Open University (OU) is a public research university and the university with the largest number of students in the UK. Most of our undergraduate students are in the UK, mainly studying off campus; many of its courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) can also be studied anywhere in the world. On the 48-hectare university campus in Milton Keynes, there are also some full-time graduate students who use OU facilities for research, as well as more than 1,000 academic and research staff and more than 2,500 administrative, operational and support staff.
Founded in 1969, OU was originally located in Alexandra Palace in North London, using the TV studio and editing facilities vacated by the BBC. The first batch of students enrolled in January 1971. The university administration is now located in Walton Hall in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, but has administrative centers in other parts of the UK. It also operates in other European countries. Universities grant undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as non-degree qualifications such as diplomas and certificates or continuing education units.
There are more than 175,000 registered students, including about 34% of undergraduate freshmen under the age of 25 and more than 7,700 overseas students. Based on the number of students, it is the largest academic institution in the UK (and one of the largest in Europe) and is eligible to become One of the largest universities in the world. Since its establishment, more than 2 million students have studied its courses. The Open University is one of the only two [A] British higher education institutions to be accredited by the United States’ Central American Higher Education Commission, an institutional accreditation agency, which is accredited by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Higher Education Accreditation Board. BSc (Hons) Computing and IT courses are quality-assured by BCS, IT Chartered Institute, and European Informatics Education Quality Assurance Network (EQANIE).
