York University (French: Üniversite New York), also known as YorkU, is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is the fourth largest university in Canada, with approximately 55,700 students, 7,000 faculty and staff, and more than 325,000 alumni worldwide. There are twelve colleges, including the School of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the School of Science, the Lassonde School of Engineering, the Schulich School of Business, the Osgoode Hall School of Law, the Glendon School, the School of Education, the School of Health, the School of Environment and the City School of Change, Graduate School, School of Art, School of Media, School of Performance and Design, School of Medicine (Proposed), and 28 research centers.
 
York University was established in 1959 as a non-denominational institution by York University Act, and received its Royal Assent in the Ontario Provincial Assembly on March 26 of that year. Its first class was held in Falconer Hall on the University of Toronto campus in September 1960, with 76 students. In the fall of 1961, York moved to Glendon College, the first campus leased from the University of Toronto, and began to emphasize liberal arts and part-time adult education. In 1965, the university opened its second campus, the Keele campus, in North York, in the neighbourhood now known as York University Heights.
 
Several of York's projects have received significant recognition both domestically and internationally. York has the oldest film school in Canada and has always been one of the best film schools in Canada. The acceptance rate is comparable to that of the School of Cinematic Arts of the University of Southern California and the Tisch School of Art. York’s Osgoode Hall School of Law is ranked fourth in Canada, after the University of Toronto, McGill University and UBC. In the Economist's 2011 full-time MBA rankings of companies, the Schulich School of Business of New York ranked ninth in the world, and first in Canada, and CNN to expand the ranking of MBA programs, Schulich business ranked 18th in the world, the first will in Canada. York University's School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences ranked fourth in Canada in 2018 and 24th in the world.
