In 2017, Wright State University celebrated its 50th anniversary. At the same time as Wright State’s historic events, Wright State University (Wright State) created a 50th anniversary website to highlight important milestones and events throughout the history of the university. The celebrations ended at the climax of "Homecoming" from September 30 to October 1, 2017, and the last day was the 50th anniversary of the university's official establishment.
 
Also in 2017, the university officially became a smoke-free university and banned all tobacco products on its Dayton and Lake campuses. Smoking cessation products are still allowed, such as nicotine instead of chewing gum, lozenges and patches. The university also offers courses to help students, faculty and staff quit smoking. After the Ohio Board of Directors proposed that all Ohio public universities ban smoking in 2012, the school decided not to smoke.
 
The Wright State University faculty union is organized and is represented by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). After two years of unsuccessful and controversial contract negotiations, they began a strike in early 2019. An agreement to end the strike was reached on February 10-11. In twenty days, this was the longest strike in Ohio’s history and one of the longest strikes in American history.
 
Susan Edwards (Susan Edwards) is the current president of the university, and she began her appointment on January 1, 2020. Previous university presidents: Brage Golding (1966–1973), Robert J. Kegerreis (1973–1985), Paige E. Mulhollan ) (1985-1994), Halle E. Flack (1994-1998), Kim Goldenberg (1998-2006), David R. Hopkins (2007-2017) and Cheryl B. Schrader (2017-2019). Curtis L. McCray served as interim president from March 17, 2017 to June 30, 2017, and held this position after Hopkins retired early on March 17, 2017. Schrader is the seventh president of Wright State University (Wright State) and the first female president. She resigned from mid-2017 to halfway through her five-year term at the end of 2019. On January 1, 2020, Susan Edwards became the eighth president of the university.
