Wilkes University was established in 1933 by Bucknell University in Wilkes-Barre as Bucknell University Junior College (BUJC). Frank G. Davis, Dean of Bucknell's Department of Education, first proposed the idea of BUJC and served as the early liaison between BUJC and Bucknell. As the demand for colleges and universities in urban areas increases, BUJC attracts many students, who are the first members of their families to benefit from higher education. The college was opened in downtown Wilkes-Barre, and the first class was held on the third floor of the Wilkes-Barre Business School building. By 1934, the business school moved out of the building, and BUJC took over it and continued to grow, acquiring old houses on the streets of South River and South Franklin as student dormitories, classrooms, and administrative offices. By 1945, the board of directors formally developed the junior college into a four-year college.
In 1947, Wilkes College became an independent, non-denominational four-year college, offering courses in the arts, sciences and many professional fields, as well as numerous extracurricular activities. [9] The student body in the post-war period was mainly composed of residents of Luzerne County, especially those who accepted the GI Act. In the 1950s, more and more students chose to live on campus, which led to the rapid expansion of student housing on campus. The increase in federal funding for science and engineering in the 1950s prompted the college to develop academic programs in these fields, establish a Stark learning center, and increase enrollment.
Wilkes College was renamed Wilkes University in December 1989, and one month later, in January 1990, the school officially obtained university status.
Wilkes University opened the School of Pharmacy in 1996, and in 1999 established the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy through the donation of Mrs. Geraldine Nesbitt Orr. The Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership was established in 2004. The following year, the Henry Student Center was expanded and the university purchased an 80,000 square foot (7,400 square meter) building in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The University Center (Ucom) on the main campus houses the Sidhu School of Business and Leadership, indoor track and field and rope courses.
By 2014, Wilkes University had grown to include 8 academic buildings, 20 dormitory buildings, 9 administrative buildings, and other facilities, such as the Eugene S. Farley Library, Henry Student Center, and sports venues.
