ICMA became a legal reality when the first constitution was passed on October 11, 1996 [3]; it was subsequently incorporated under the Associations Act 1981 (Victoria) on November 12, 1981.

In March 1997, at the founding member meeting, it was decided to elect Mr. Leon Duval (a certified public accountant and management accountant with approximately 25 years of experience) as the interim president. A room in Mr. Duval’s office in Suite 6 of 242 Hawthorne Road, Caulfield, is the first address and secretariat of ICMA.

In the name of Mr. Duval, invitations were sent to more than 150 leading professionals and scholars in the field of management accounting to join the new institute as members of the foundation. Almost immediately 75 people accepted the invitation. The initial executive committee of the institute was selected from the members of its foundation.

Today, ICMA is a full-service organization for its members and other stakeholders. The services provided by the ICMA Secretariat[6] include maintaining a company website that conforms to ICMA’s international image; including designing and maintaining a member area on the website. ICMA publishes 6 On Target eNewsletter every year, and has a biennial research journal, Management Accounting Frontiers (MAF). It has a library of more than 12,000 texts and professional and academic publications.
