Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1636, Harvard University is named after its first benefactor and pastor John Harvard. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world.
The colonial legislature of Massachusetts, the ordinary court, authorized the founding of Harvard. In the early years, Harvard University mainly trained Congregational and Monotheistic clergy, although it was never formally affiliated with any denomination. Its curriculum and student body gradually became secularized in the 18th century, and by the 19th century, Harvard had become the central cultural institution among the Boston elite. Following the American Civil War, President Charles Eliot's long-term tenure (1869-1909) transformed the university and transformed the affiliated professional school into a modern research university; Harvard became a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. James B. Conant led the university through the Great Depression and World War II; after the war, he relaxed his admissions policy.
The university consists of ten colleges and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences provides undergraduates and graduate students with a wide range of subjects, while other colleges only provide graduate degrees, mainly professional degrees. Harvard has three main campuses: the 209-acre (85 hectare) Cambridge campus centered on Harvard Park; the adjacent campus is immediately near the Charles River in Alston, Boston; and the medical campus in the Longwood Medical District of Boston. Harvard’s donation is worth 41.9 billion U.S. dollars, the largest of any academic institution. Donation income helps undergraduate colleges to admit students regardless of financial needs and provide generous financial aid without the need for loans. The Harvard Library is the world's largest academic library system, including 79 project libraries holding approximately 20.4 million individuals.
Harvard has more Nobel Prizes (161) and Fields Medals (18) alumni, faculty, staff, and researchers than any other university in the world, and has become a member of the US Congress, a MacArthur Prize member, and a Rhodes scholar (375 People) also have more alumni and Marshall Scholars (255) than any other university in the United States. Its alumni also include eight US presidents and 188 living billionaires, the most of any university. The fourteen Turing Award winners are affiliated institutions of Harvard. Students and alumni also won 10 Oscars, 48 Pulitzer Prizes and 108 Olympic medals (46 gold medals), and they founded many famous companies.
