Dalhousie University (commonly known as Dalhousie University) is a public research university in Nova Scotia, Canada, with three campuses in Halifax, on the Fourth Bible Mountain, and in a medical teaching facility in St. John’s, New Brunswick Rick Province. Dalhousie offers more than 4,000 courses and 180 degree courses in 12 undergraduate, graduate and professional colleges. The university is a member of U15, which is a research-intensive university in Canada.
Dalhousie was established as a sect by the lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia of the 1818 college of the same name, George Ramsay, the 9th Earl of Dalhousie. The university did not open its first class until 1838, and until then it operated sporadically due to financial difficulties. After reorganization, it reopened for the third time in 1863 and was renamed "Governor of Dalhousie College and University". The university officially changed its name to "Dalhousie University" in 1997 through the same provincial legislation that merged the institution with the Nova Scotia Technical University.
Currently, there are two student unions representing the university’s student interests: Dalhousie Student Union and Dalhousie Graduate Association. Dalhousie's college team, the Tigers, participated in the Atlantic University Sports Conference of Canadian College Sports. The university team at Dalhousie Agricultural College is called the Dalhousie Rams and participates in ACAA and CCAA competitions. Dalhousie is a coeducational university with more than 18,000 students and 130,000 alumni worldwide. Famous alumni of the university include Nobel Prize winners, 91 Rhodes Scholars, and a series of senior government officials, scholars and business leaders.
